Prelude: How Can I Keep From Singing?

Welcome, Invocation, Confession and Absolution

Confession and Absolution

P Trusting God’s promise of forgiveness, let us not avoid Him by reason of our guilt, but rather confess to Him our sin, believe in His kindness and forgiveness, and walk in newness of life.
Please Kneel
Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination

P Eternal Father, all-seeing and loving God,
C Your laws are just and good, but we have trespassed their bounds.
Look upon us, Your children, with mercy, for we have sinned.
Forgive us our offenses, cleanse us from proud thoughts and vain desires,
and by Your grace, draw us near to live in You.

P Jesus Christ, uniquely, is the One Person who never transgressed, the faithful One
who lived and died for mankind’s salvation. Peace with God is by faith in Him,
and God pours His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us for Christ’s sake. Then have faith and receive this:
All your sins are forgiven, in the Name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit
C Amen.

Holy Gospel Reading: Mark 4:26-34

Holy Gospel Mark 3:26-34
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the third chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
26[Jesus] said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. 28The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
30And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
33With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. 34He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Prayer of the Day

L What sort of a King are You, O God?
C “With what can we compare the kingdom of God …”
L What sort of kingdom do You rule?
C “… or what parable shall we use for it?”
L You are a God of miraculous growth …
C “It is like a grain of mustard seed …”
L … a sower of seeds …
C “… which, when sown, grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants …”
L … who calls grand plants out of tiny seeds …
C “… so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
L … and transforms base servants into a nation of priests.
C Send us, Your priests, to spread the good news.
L Then Your kingdom’s branches will spread. Then many will come to rest in its shade. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. He lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now,
C and forever. Amen.

Readings: Old Testament 1 Samuel 1:4-9

Old Testament 1 Samuel 1:4-9
The story of how Hannah became pregnant with Samuel (c. 1070 B.C.). Samuel went on to become the prophet/priest who anointed Saul as first King of Israel, then also David (born 1040 B.C.), who became the second king.
4On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. 5But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. 6And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. 7So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. 8And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”
9After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. 10She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly. 11And she vowed a vow and said, “O LORD of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.”
1And Hannah prayed and said [the ‘Song of Hannah’]:
“My heart exults in the LORD; my strength is exalted in the LORD. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. 2“There is none holy like the LORD; there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. 3Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. 4The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength. 5Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. 6The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. 7The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. 8He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes
and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, and on them he has set the world. 9“He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. 10The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the power of his anointed.”
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Sermon: God’s Promise to Send David to His People

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Holy Communion

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen.
