Old Testament Reading: 2 Samuel 6:12-23
(David dances for joy as the ark is brought into the city.)
And it was told King David, “The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing. And when those who bore the ark of the LORD had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. And David danced before the LORD with all his might.
C And David danced before the LORD with all his might!
L And David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the horn.
As the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart. And they brought in the ark of the LORD and set it in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed, each to his house.
And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants’ female servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” And David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the LORD—and I will celebrate before the LORD. I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.” And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Gospel Reading: Luke 1:39-45
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 1st chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb.
C The baby leaped in her womb!
L And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Prayer of the Day
L Lord Jesus Christ, when John heard the voice of Your mother, the Spirit caused him to leap in Elizabeth’s womb
C for You were now present in the flesh to save all flesh.
L Draw near to us in Your Word and Sacraments and stir up our hearts
C that we, being ever mindful of Your gracious visitation, may leap for joy and serve You with gladness
L through this life and into the life of the world to come,
C where we shall behold You face to face in the resurrection of all flesh;
L for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
C and forever. Amen.
Song of the Day: O Come, O Come Emmanuel
Sermon – The Child Who is John’s Joy
L What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping?
C This, this is Christ the King, the Father’s only Son, our Lord— who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
—the Babe, the Son of Mary!
Prayer of the Church
Offertory: What Child Is This?
So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh; Come, peasant, king, to own Him.
The King of kings salvation brings; Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
Raise, raise the song on high, The virgin sings her lullaby;
Joy, joy, for Christ is born, The babe, the son of Mary!

Confession and Absolution
L When Mary, bearing Jesus inside her, approached Elizabeth, her son, who would become John the Baptist, jumped for joy inside her. Let us confess to God and one another that we have not always fully appreciated the joy He brings to each of us.
Worshipers face each other across the center aisle.
Left side: I confess to God Almighty and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have allowed the cares and worries of this world to dampen my spirit and mute my joy. I have given the expectations of others more weight than my desire to thank our heavenly Father for all His blessings. I have rejoiced in times of elation but failed to thank our Lord for the gift of each new day. And I have forgotten to listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, seldom jumping for joy over the abiding presence of God in my life.
Right side: May God’s forgiving grace become a part of your daily awareness so that you may rejoice in your thinking, speaking, and acting.

L Rejoice in the Lord always! The baby in whose presence John jumped for joy is your Savior from every failing of yours and from sin itself. That you may rejoice now and always, I therefore announce to you the forgiveness of all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen. Let it be as you have said. Amen!
