Welcome and Invocation

Confession and Forgiveness

Confession and Forgiveness LSB 167
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Kneel Silence for self-examination –
P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die and be the propitiation for all your sins and for His sake forgives you everything. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Hym of Praise

Readings: Luke 24:44–53; Revelation 12:9–12

Holy Gospel: Luke 24:44–53

Holy Gospel Luke 24:44–53
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
44Then [Jesus] said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
50Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53and were continually in the temple blessing God.
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

New Testament Reading: Revelation 12:9–12

9And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. 12Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”
A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Prayer of the Day

L Give us the joy the disciples felt, O God—
C joy that led them to worship Your Son. Joy that led them to praise Your name.
L For we believe that on Ascension day Christ Jesus, our Lord, was lifted from the earth …
C hidden by a cloud …
L … and taken into heaven.
C Lift us up, O God,
L to see that Christ is in heaven, seated at Your right hand.
C Lift us up, O God,
L for we have been baptized to participate in His rule.
C Lift us up, O God!
L Through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. He lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now,
C and forever. Amen.

Epistle Reading: Ephesians 1:15–23; 2:4–7

Epistle Reading Ephesians 1:15–23; 2:4–7
15For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, 16I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all…
4And God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Sermon: The Place of Authority

Declaration of Faith and Consecration

I believe in the ascension to heaven of the Lord Jesus Christ
and in His enthronement there at the Father’s right hand.
And that I have been included in Christ, baptized into Christ,
seated with Him in heavenly places,
such that I participate in His throne.
Lord Jesus, I receive You as my authority, rule, and dominion,
my everlasting victory against Satan and his kingdom,
and my ability to do Your will and bring Your Kingdom in every way.
I believe in and receive all the work and triumph in Your ascension,
through which Satan has been judged and cast down,
and all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to You.
Lord Jesus, You are my King, You alone; I renounce any other.
I give myself to You, for Your reign to be over me,
and Your Word to command me always.
You are worthy to receive all glory and honor,
power and dominion, now and forever.
