Welcome and Invocation

Litany for Lent
P O Christ, out of Your fullness we have all received grace upon grace.
You are our eternal hope;
You are patient and full of mercy;
You are generous to all who call upon You.
C Save us, Lord.
P O Christ, fountain of life and holiness,
You have taken away our sins.
On the cross You were wounded for our transgressions
and were bruised for our iniquities.
C Save us, Lord.
P O Christ, obedient unto death,
source of all comfort,
our life and our resurrection,
our peace and reconciliation:
C Save us, Lord.
P O Christ, Savior of all who trust You,
hope of all who die in You,
and joy of all the saints:
C Save us, Lord.
P Jesus, Lamb of God,
C have mercy on us.
P Jesus, bearer of our sins,
C have mercy on us.
P Jesus, redeemer of the world,
C grant us peace.
P God of love,
as in Jesus Christ You gave Yourself to us,
so may we give ourselves to You,
living according to Your holy will.
Keep our feet firmly in the way where Christ leads us;
make our mouths speak the truth that Christ teaches us;
fill our bodies with the life that is Christ within us.
In His holy name we pray.
C Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

P Return to Me with all your heart, says the Lord, with prayer and fasting, weeping and mourning, with broken and contrite hearts.
C For the Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.

(Silence for reflection and self-examination)
P Merciful Father, You sent Your Son to save sinners, and I have sinned!
C I have failed to love, even those closest to me, preferring that others serve me.
I have neglected works of mercy,
as though disregard of others fulfilled my duty to them.
I have resisted Your word and the Holy Spirit’s guidance of my heart, presuming that I know better.
I have been enticed by fallen desires, rebelling against You.
O Lord, wash away my sin. Create in me a clean heart, and uphold me with a humble spirit which walks trustingly with You.

P How great is the mercy of God, that we would sin and He would give His beloved Son to die for it. But it’s true! For the sake of Him who died in our place, God does not count our sins against us. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Readings: Daniel 9:1-6, 8-10, 17-23a; Luke 11:5-10

Old Testament Reading: Daniel 9:1–6,8-10,17–23a

1In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, by descent a Mede, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans— 2in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, perceived in the books the number of years that, according to the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet, must pass before the end of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years.

3Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. 4I prayed to the Lord my God and made confession, saying, “O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 5we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. 6We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

8To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. 9To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him 10and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

17Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his pleas for mercy, and for your own sake, O Lord, make your face to shine upon your sanctuary, which is desolate. 18O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. 19O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. Delay not, for your own sake, O my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.”

20While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for the holy hill of my God, 21while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, came to me in swift flight at the time of the evening sacrifice. 22He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, “O Daniel, I have now come out to give you insight and understanding. 23At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, and I have come to tell it to you, for you are greatly loved.

A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel: Luke 11:5–10

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the eleventh chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.

5And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon: Praying for a Breakthrough

Apostles’ Creed

C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life T everlasting. Amen.
